Which OS?

I am with ubuntu 8.10 now. Left windows years back. Now what ? We build our own comfort levels everywhere: People, Places, Products… and Choosing a OS and sticking on is same. Time to change but what? MacOS, Freebsd..or  OpenBSD. They all are Unix based and I am good on that. I guess i have none to move on, to make myself uncomfortable, to Challenge.

My new phone: Nokia E90.

Its around a 2 months my wife gifted me Nokia E90 and I am amazed with what all I can do with this phone. Here Specifications. Now I browse using my E90 as my home, office and Forum mall which are wi-fi enabled.I carry everything on this now:PDF documents, Songs, Audio Books, office word docs. The best part i love about E90 is the screen size. You can watch a movie on it. I love the GPRS on this phone which just works perfect. I tried both Google maps and Nokia Maps: Nokia is more recent and updated with voice navigation (Expensive* though ) as compared to Google maps.

Things I have done till.

  • Added my mail accounts to the phone. If you want to reach me anytime use my: me =at=sachingopal.net id.
  • Configured my SIP settings with Sipphone for VOIP calls.
  • Loaded NOKIA Maps. As this phone has a GPRS.
  • Loaded locatiion tagger.
  • Installed Gizmo and Fring. (Now I don’t need to run to my laptop when sombody calls me on my Skype or Gizmo id)
  • Nokia Podcasting! Now all my linux podcasts are downloaded into my phone. And when killing time I Listen.
  • Code break :Look Ma now My favourate Python runs on E90.
  • Putty the saver. I can manage every single server at office, home including my ddwrt-router through phone. Its fun to the core.
  • Yes I play GBA Games with the VBAG emulator. Last time
i owned a gameboy was years back which I got from my cousin.
  • Boingo, A public wifi hotspot finder (The best yet i found till)
  • Ultimate Voice Recorder (How many times you wanted to record that rude support guy)
  • Installed Webgate Answering Machine (Yes sir, and I save money dialing to my voice inbox)
  • SportsTracker to track my workout online using GPS.
  • Shozu rocks. The supported application list is extensive.
  • Smartphoneware softwares: Crypto, Best Expense and Best Safe.

Work seems to be more in place recently with E90 :)

First 5 minutes with google chrome(Beta).

1. Damn this thing in too small (while downloading) 475kb.
2. Awhh installs from the web. (Guess its more than 7mb).
3. Installation is just a moving progress bar. No custom install options.
4. The first thing it did ask me once installed was: Do you want to keep google as your search engine ?Awesome.
5. The visual area (as default) is so far the max i have seen on this browser. I am impressed.
6. All my keyboard shortcuts work flawlessly.
7. Chrome uses the top bar for keeping tabs, A smart move to save space.
8. I fed some test sites which misbehave on opera:Works Perfect.
9. Pop up blocker works.
10. Downloader is again impeccable. Sits down extreme left with the tab box indicating which page initiated the download.
11. A new tab shows history pages as thumbnail with a search bar something I really need.

My say:  I am with Chrome from now on. The way google works this browser would soon have
tons of features when it moves off  beta. Go download  Google Chrome. Here is the feature list.

Update: Try on address bar about:memory and see details on Chrome and other browsers memory usage. Alternatively try  (shift + esc) to see google chrome taskbar. Buggy flash.

Moving Livejournal to Wordpress.

If you got a livejournal account like Me and moved on to to wordpress, here is a way to pull out all the entries including comments from livejournal to your self managed blog. Download ljarchive, Feed in your livejournal login and save all the entries as xml. Once done get back to your wordpress and feed in the xml file. Done.

Would suggest to do it before you update your wordpress journal. I can be wrong, but some entries were missing when i did the update on the blog which had previous entries. When i did it on a clean database, it took all of them.

TIP :If you don’t want to miss on people who used to frequent your livejournal get the Livejournal crossposter and when you make a post on your wordpress blog it gets posted on yor livejournal account. Easy, ain’t?

And i give myself http://www.sachingopal.net. I am still not sure about how to make postings on this self managed blog and livejournal at the same time. May be a python script. Here i never had to think of database, design, backup. With my own site up i have to look for all these. Something has to be done. Or may be different postings.

Privacy ?

I am on the path for designing my site and realized that always and today i was concerned about online privacy. Trust me one day to find about you, nobody will call you. They will google you. There are already documents and how to’s explaining to delete your online presence.

Back to where i started: Now when i look on to the web world i see services like Plazes, Twitter which are popular. Now i understand that they share a lot of information about me. Honestly i love showing online where i am , what i am doing but when i think for my privacy this is all freakingly scary.

Every time i check my bank or look at a site i am concerned of phishing scams, when i register i try to have pseudo-names, My home machines whenever went online been always on my own hand coded iptables. IDS has been always a part of my home machines. Still there are places you get information on me. Did a google here and you see my Xensource id. A whois gives my home address. Will this come back on me someday ? Will it for you ?
